He notes that while the use of AI to make predictions, recommendations, or decisions has enormous potential to improve welfare and productivity, the technology also presents risks, such as the potential for unfair or discriminatory outcomes.
Given its experience in dealing with the challenges presented by the use of data and algorithms to make decisions about consumers, the FTC can offer important lessons about how companies can manage the consumer protection risks of AI and algorithms.
FTC’s law enforcement actions, studies, and guidance have stressed that the use of AI tools should be transparent, explainable, fair and empirically sound.
