Today is international day of Romani, to celebrate Romani cultures and raise awareness on the issues modern Romas face today. So this is my monthly reminder to stop using the term "G*psy" because it is a racial slur that was coined by the English monarch, they though /continued
that because the Romani had dark skin(they originally migrated from places near modern India) that they came from Egypt, so they coined this slur to use against them, they later passed a law that made it illegal to be a "g*psy" and it was punishable by death.
romani are still persecuted and policed. Since their migration from India approximately six hundred years ago, suffered economic, political and cultural discrimination at the hands of both communist and capitalist and both democratic and totalitarian societies.
in 1979, Charter 77 and other human rights organizations accused the government of attempting to commit genocide of Roma through forced sterilization and the practice of forcibly taking Rom children from their parents, 50% sterilized were women
Today Roma continue to suffer the effects of sterilization, but no health officials have been prosecuted. Many do not know this - but thousands of Roma were hunted and persecuted during the holocausts, they sat near their jewish brothers and sister in those concentration camps.
In Bulgaria, the socialist government denied the existence of Roma while it simultaneously implemented assimilationist policies. As early as the 1960s, the government forced Roma with Muslim names to change their names to Slavic ones, as part of a "rebirth" or "Bulgarization"
