So banks were the monsters, as it turns out, and the ruling order in Lebanon will now save the day. What next?I mean, what next after Covid-19, assuming it passes relatively bearable? We will have a state that is officially bankrupt, an irreparably ignorant and corrupt regime 1/2
roughed up and scruffy excuses for banks, a dump of an economy /if any at all / and oh yes, the Bisri dam.
I mean, with or without the IMF, with or without Salameh, with the banks or something else, with a haircut or a close shave, with Diab or some other ornament... Is that it?2
And life continues, miserably? Will we go back to the streets and, if yes, what for?I have observed a good degree of nonsense concerning economic and monetary solutions. It has nothing to do with the validity of the numbers or the theories, 3/
rather the fogginess of priorities that strikes me.
These rants about the IMF, privatization, the imaginary class struggle à la Masraf bunch, or the many flavors and diet versions thereof; these diversions keeping people’s attention away from the true monster is unbearable.
Is it truly about rich versus poor, capitalist pigs versus socialist puritans, greed versus responsibility? Was Lebanon a true free market economy, or merely a vulgar, third world oligarchy ran by ignoramuses?
Has anybody noticed how vulgarity breeds the same, whether on the left or on the right? Viciously corrupt oligarchies. Like the rest of the world, it is simply about civility versus vulgarity; left or right, east or west, no matter.
In deliberating on how to get out of this relatively uncrippled – just so that we have some sort of a road toward normalcy to walk back on – I will try to add some priority and common sense. Just in case people decide to go after the true monster next time.
