Just another point from your local friendly disabled person from what I've been reading today: being ill is not a learning experience & you don't become a better person by experiencing ill health. I'm concerned by people saying certain people should learn a lesson by being sick

People may come out of their illness with greater empathy for other ill people or they may not. The expectation that we should is put on disabled people all the time. I have met many sick/disabled people who are arseholes, the same as in any other group of people.

By being ill, we are not saints, angels, or any other such thing. We are people, just living our lives the same as everyone else.
