Today's #WednesdayWritingTips are about listening to your inner editor! We were talking about this last night on my Advanced Picture Books Writing course.

1) Sometimes when writing, there's a nagging feeling that something's not quite right. Often we think, 'oh, it'll be fine.'
2) It usually won't be fine.
It's soooo much easier to ignore The Nagging Thing than to address it, but you'll save lots of time if you address it NOW.

3) Often this is a painful process. The reason we put off editing and 'fixing' the problem is because it often feels beyond us. Perhaps a big rewrite, or restructure, or rethinking a character. But it IS worth it.

4) Spend time honestly looking at what The Nagging Thing is. Identifying the root of the problem really helps. Write it down clearly so you have properly admitted it to yourself. Start looking at ways to address it.

5) Once you have resolved and overcome The Nagging Thing, you, as an author, have become stronger and more experienced. If YOU had noticed The Nagging Thing, then others probably would have too. It could have been the difference between a YES or a rejection.

6) So, as painful as it might be sometimes, don't ignore Nagging Things. Instead, celebrate that your inner editor is alive and well and helping you out. Even if that drives you mad.
