More on what I’ve been working on these past few weeks.
Lots of work to be done so that the parts of the research ecosystem that are under strain have adequate resourcing.
We also need to better understand what reality awaits on the other side of this. (1/n) https://twitter.com/InvestInOpen/status/1247879955050115074

Few key assumptions we’re working off of for starters:
1) Openness is going to be radically more accepted (even demanded) than ever before post-crisis.
(There were already shifts towards this, but now that’s even more heightened.)

2) Many key pieces of the schol research landscape are at risk — this incl. funding challenges, issues of rapidly scaling efforts without necessary resourcing (human + $). Anticipate further consolidation + tough decisions as belts tighten.

3) The funding landscape is going to be radically different. This touches on a number of dimensions, from funding sources tied to stock market performance (endowments), to institutional budget cuts / freezes, + emergence of new capital.

. @InvestInOpen was created to help chart a way towards more sustainable, durable, *open* research infra. Based on top-notch research, backed up by data.
We are seeing in real time the research landscape transform + openness emerge as both a necessity and a default.

Our work ahead lies in mapping what information funders (institutional + more traditional philanthropy) need to converge on #openinfra.
We are also working on criteria to assess + vet projects for investment, learning from models employed in other sectors. (6/n)

Ways you can help:
1) Are you a funder / university decision maker currently investing in #openinfra? We are looking for initial stakeholders to help us scope an initial prototype of what this could look like.

2) We’re also looking for examples of this sort of research — where actionable recommendations are the end result — that we can learn from. ( @GiveWell is one of our favorites, as well as other more business-focused-market analyses-type reports.)
