Listen to the most recent episode of my podcast: #14 - Anna Madlener @annarcma : Underwater Robotics and Gender in STEMM #StorytellersofSTEMM #teamHB5 #womeninSTEMM https://anchor.fm/storytellersofSTEMM/episodes/14---Anna-Madlener-Underwater-Robotics-and-Gender-in-STEMM-ec967i
Anna @annarcma wrote a fantastic article called "Together, technology and art could make society want to save the ocean": https://feed.itsrio.org/together-technology-and-art-could-make-society-want-to-save-the-ocean-d5c9d1471f36
Anna @annarcma gave a talk called "Synergetic ocean immersions: music, art, and robots" about a project called Oceanic Sound Art to use art to raise ocean awareness: https://vimeo.com/334620727
From Anna: "I was selected an Ocean Discovery Fellow in November 2018 to attend the annual Ocean Exploration Forum by NOAA that was hosted at MIT Media Lab." https://www.allhandsondeck.community/ocean-discovery-fellows
Anna also met several amazing women in STEMM ( #womeninstemm) as an Ocean Discovery Fellow, and that's also how she learned about the Homeward Bound @HomewardBound16 Program! Anna is now #teamHB5 :D https://homewardboundprojects.com.au/hb1-participants/hb5-participants/
As an Ocean Discovery Fellow, Anna @annarcma met Megan Lubetkin and they bonded over their love of ocean and art. They created a music and video creation inspired by the jellyfish Deepstaria enigmatica for the Wohnzimmer Adventures music festival: https://vimeo.com/313736508

Anna & I both enjoy reading sci-fi and the book that helped fuel her interest in underwater robotics is called The Swarm by Frank Schätzing. I read it after our chat and it's really great! https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/68146.The_Swarm
In STEMM there is what is called the "leaky pipeline" which shows the spots where there are leaks and women leave STEMM for one reason or another. Here's a visual: https://www.researchgate.net/figure/An-illustration-of-the-leaking-STEM-pipeline-showing-how-more-and-more-students-do_fig1_291829604
There are lots of articles written about the leaky pipeline so I'll share a few. First, from @NPR : https://www.npr.org/sections/13.7/2018/02/02/581849526/leaky-pipelines-plug-the-holes-or-change-the-system
There's an entire Wikipedia page for this as well: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/STEM_pipeline
It's important to know that some people leave the STEM pipeline on purpose, or to pursue other things but all the reasons get clumped together. The leaky pipeline shows how widespread the problem is, is not 100% women who are pushed out of STEM, and we can still do better
"According to the UNESCO Institute for Statistics, less than 30% of the world’s STEM researchers are women. There is data that proves women in STEM careers are paid less for their research." https://www.womenshistory.org/articles/fixing-leaky-pipeline

Let's talk about ocean robots!! One of the more famous ones is called Alvin, and it's a human occupied vehicle (HOV) rather than one controlled remotely from the surface (that's an ROV). Alvin was built in 1963 & has been upgraded several times: https://www.whoi.edu/what-we-do/explore/underwater-vehicles/hov-alvin/ @WHOI
Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute @WHOI has many videos about Alvin, including this:
