Thread: Ikhlas (sincerity) VS Riya' (show-off)

I begin with the Name of Allaah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful.

إنَّ الإخلاص هو حقيقة الدين ، ومفتاح دعوة المرسلين .. قال سبحانه : { وَ مَنْ أَحْسَنُ دِينَاً مِمَنْ أَسْلََمَ وَجْهَهُ للهِ وَهُوَ مُحْسِن } .

Indeed, Ikhlas (sincerity) is the reality of the Religion (Islam), and its the key of the Da'awah (the calling) of the Messengers.

"And who can be better in religion than one who submits his face (himself) to Allaah (follows Allaah's religion of Islamic Monotheism); and he is a Muhsin (a good-doer).." Qur'an 4:125

وعن أبي هريرة رضي الله عنه قال : قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم :( قال تعالى : أنا أغنى الشركاء عن الشرك، من عمل عملاً أشرك معيَ فيه غيري تركته وشركه ) رواه مسلم .

Abu Hurayrah (RA) narrated that the Prophet (SAW) narrated from his Lord that He said, "I am the best of partners, so whoever does an act of worship, commiting shirk in it, I am free from him, and he is left to the partner he associated Me with." Muslim

ماهو الإخلاص ؟
أن يكون قصد الإنسان في سكناته وحركاته وعباداته الظاهرة والباطنة خالصة لوجه الله تعالى لا يريد بها شيئاً من حطام الدنيا أو ثناء الناس

Ikhlas means that the intention of Man in his repose and movement and in his apparent and hidden acts of worship are for Allaah the Exalted. Not seeking thereby anything of the world nor the praise of people.

قال الفضل بن زياد : سألت أبا عبد الله ـ يعني الإمام أحمد بن حنبل ـ سألته عن النية في العمل ، قلت : كيف النية ، قال : يعالج نفسه إذا أراد عملاً لا يريد به الناس ..أن يعالج نفسه فإذا أراد عملاً لا يريد به إلا وجه الله تبارك تعالى

فبالإخلاص يعطي الله على القليل الكثير ، وبالرياء وترك الإخلاص لا يعطي الله على الكثير شيئاً ، ورُبَّ درهم سبق مئة ألف درهم .

By the virtue of Ikhlas (sincerity), Allaah gives much (reward) for little (deed). While with Riya and the abandonment of Ikhlas, Allaah does not give anything (of reward) for much (deed). A Dirham (given for the sake of Allaah) will precede 100 Dirhams (given out of Riya')

فالأعمال تتفاضل بتفاضل ما في القلوب من الإيمان والإجلا

Actions are differentiated by the that which is in the heart of Faith and honor.

أنَّ أداء الطاعة بدون إخلاص وصدق مع الله لا قيمة لها ولا ثواب لها عليها ، بل صاحبها معرَّض للوعيد الشديد

The performance of acts of worship without Ikhlas and truthfulness to Allaah, has no worth nor will it be rewarded. Nay! The doer of the action is exposed to a strong threat

إنه الإخلاص الذي يجعل للأعمال قيمة عند الله تبارك وتعالى ، فلا إنفاق، ولا استشهاد ، ولا قراءة قرآن ... إلا بالإخلاص لله ربِّ العالمين

It is Ikhlas (sincerity) that gives value to deeds in the Sight of Allaah the Glorified, the Exalted, not feeding nor martyrdom nor recitation of the Qur’an except by Ikhlas (doing deeds for the sake Allaah the Lord of all that exists)

فقد كان سلفنا الصالح من أشدِّ الناس خوفاً على أعمالهم من أن يخالطها الرياء أو تشوبها شائبة الشرك فكانوا رحمهم الله يجاهدون أنفسهم في أعمالهم وأقوالهم كي تكون خالصة لوجه الله تبارك وتعالى

Indeed, our pious predecessors (Salaf) were the most fearful of people with regards to their deeds against being mixed with Riya and tainted with Shirk. They (may Allaah have mercy on them) strove on their souls in their deeds and speech so that it will be for the sake of Allaah

وقال سفيان الثوري : ما عالجت شيئاً أشدّ عليَّ من نيتي لأنها تتقلب عليَّ في كل حين .

Sufyan Thawri said: Nothing is more difficult for me to handle more than my Niyya (intention) because it keeps fluctuating at each time.

وقال يوسف بن أسباط : تخليص النية من فسادها أشد على العاملين من طول الاجتهاد.

Yusuf ibn Asbat said, "Purifying the intention from its corruption is harder upon the workers than long striving (i.e. in their work)."

وقال أبو حازم :لا يحسن عبدٌ فيما بينه وبين ربه إلا أحسن الله ما بينه وبين العباد ، ولا يعوِّر ما بينه وبين الله إلا أعوَّر الله ما بينه وبين العباد

Abu Hazm said: "No servant makes good what is between him and his Lord except that Allaah will correct that which is between him and the slaves (others). And he does not spoil that which is between him and Allaah except that Allaah spoils that which is between him and others.

أين بعض المسلمين اليوم الذي يحدِّث جميع أعماله ، ولربما قام ليلة من الدهر لعلم به الأقارب والجيران والأصدقاء ..

Where are some of the Muslims today that inform (others) about all their deeds. Perhaps he stood up at night for a year (for Tahajjud) in order for others to know..

أنَّ السلف يخفون أعمالهم لضعف إيمانهم وهؤلاء يظهرونها لكمال الإيمان ..
عجباً ثم عجباً ...

Indeed, the Salaf would hide thier deeds because (they felt thier) Iman was weak while today these Muslims show theirs because of the "perfect" Iman. Amazing, very amazing!

إذا أردت أن يحبك الله ، وأن تنال رضاه فما عليك إلا بصدقات مخفية لا تعلم شمالك ما أنفقت يمينك فضلاً أن يعلمه الناس .

If you desire that Allaah should love you and that you attain His Pleasure, then there is nothing upon you except that you should give charity in secret such that your left (hand) is unaware of what your right (hand) gives let alone people knowing.

وما عليك إلا بركعات إمامُها الخشوع ، وقائدها الإخلاص تركعها في ظلمات الليل بحيث لا يراك إلا الله ، ولا يعلم بك أحد ..

What is upon you expect Raka'ats (Prayer) whose Imam is humility (full submissiveness), and its commander is Ikhlas (sincerity), that you observe in the depth of the night such that none but Allaah sees you, and known knows of it.

فلما أخفوا أعمالهم أخفى الله لهم من الأجر ما الله به عليم { فَلا تَعْلَمُ نَفْسٌ مَا أُخْفِيَ لَهُم مِنْ قُرَةِ أَعْيُنٍ جَزَاءً بِمَا كَانُوا يَعْمَلُونَ }

When the Salaf (pious predecessors) hid their good deeds, Allaah hide from them of reward (Paradise) which only Him knows

ومن خير الناس ( بسَّام بالنهار بكَّاءٌ في الليل )

And from amongst good people (he laughs during the hours of the day and cries to his Lord in the depth of the night).

اعلموا أنَّ الإخلاص ينافيه عدة أمور. من حبِّ الدنيا ، والشهرة ، والشرف ، والرياء ،والسمعة ، والعُجب
Know that Ikhlas (sincerity) is being negated by many things. Such as Materialism, love of fame and honor (amongst people), Riya (show-off) and wanting to be known and self conceit

اللهم اجعل عملنا في رضاك خالصاً لوجهك الكريم

اللهم طهِّر قلوبنا من النفاق وأعمالنا من الرياء وألسنتنا من الكذب وأعيننا من الخيانة

Oh Allaah! Purify our hearts from hypocrisy and our deeds from Riya (show-off) and our tongues from lies and our eyes from deceit.
