THREAD: The @TheIFS produced this report showing the sectors and workers which are most exposed to the #COVID19 shutdowns. We have used their sectors to try to show which 'places' are therefore most exposed to the shutdown.... https://twitter.com/TheIFS/status/1247049045585154048?s=20
We're going to take a couple of sectors which the @TheIFS identified and list the places most exposed to each, and then the total exposure for each place. We'll use abbreviations for regions in brackets: YH = Yorkshire & Humber; W = Wales; etc.
Let's start with 'Non-food and non-pharmaceutical retail'. The ten places with the highest exposure to their shutdown are: Milnrow (NW), Biggleswade (East), Llandudno (W), Driffield (YH), Pyle (W), Todmorden (NW), Hessle (YH), Sarn (W), Brough (YH) & Accrington (NW).
You'll see, it's predominantly small towns with the highest proportions of employee's in the retail shutdown sectors. The city with the highest retail risk is Manchester, which is ranked 262nd out of over a thousand places. London is ranked 501st fyi.
Moving on to the next sector: Passenger transport. The ten places with the highest exposure to their shutdown are: Stanley (NE), Ramsgate (SE), Heanor (EM), Oldbury (WM), Newhaven (SE), Tiverton (SW), Rhondda (Wales), Armthorpe (YH), Prescot (NW), Newport (W).
The next sector is Accommodation. The ten places with the highest exposure to the shutdown are: St Ives (SW), Mablethorpe (EM), Swanage (SW), Skegness (EM), Newquay (SW), South Hayling (SE), Northam (SW), Llandudno (W), Whitley Bay (NE) and Whitby (YH)
This is a sector we are particularly worried about. It's dominated by seaside towns, many of which were already facing very challenging circumstances. St Ives, for example, has 38% of it's employee's employed in the Accommodation sector (B&Bs, hotels)
We looked at the places with the highest OVERALL exposure to the current shutdown. The ten most exposed places are: Skegness (EM), Newquay (SW), St Ives (SW), Mablethorpe (EM), Llandudno (W), Swanage (SW), Newmarket (East), Northam (SW), Whitley Bay (NE), and Whitby (YH)
We will of course be releasing the data soon......
