This week we begin the holiday of Passover, a holiday of joy, hope, and celebration as we retell the story of our exodus from Egypt and our escape from slavery.
Our tradition tells us that every year during this holiday, we must retell this story as a reminder of who we are and where we came from.
During the Passover Seder, we ask the question: Ma Nishtanah Halailah Hazeh? Why is this night different? Well, you already know why?
This Passover is different because the Covid-19 virus has changed the lives of every human being around the world. We are all physically distancing ourselves from one another. We are afraid of catching this virus and fearful of the impact it is having on people around the world.
All of this is getting in the way of our Passover Seders. We will make it through because that is who we are as Jews. We carry on. This Pesach is one that will definitely go down in history, and our memories of this Passover will probably be added to future Haggadot.
The 1st seder, as we understand it today, was created after the destruction of the 2nd Temple, & Jews could no longer offer sacrifices. During that time, Passover needed 2B reinvented. This Passover season is another time in our history where we will need to reinvent the holiday
This Passover may be a time to liberate ourselves from our traditions and celebrate our Seders in different ways. Many of us may be gathering in front of Zoom, Facebook Live or other live streaming technology with our families and friends.
How ever we choose to celebrate, we will be creative in our celebration, and we will create something unique and something that has never been done before, which is totally awesome.
All of this reminds me of Passover's other name, Zman Cherutainu, a time of our freedom or a time of our liberation. In the Haggadah, we read about our liberation from slavery.
Today we will need to liberate ourselves from the ways we have traditionally done the Passover Seder, and we need to remember that this is a holiday of joy, hope, and celebration. So, how will your Passover Seder be Different than all other Seders? Chag Sameach
