I really wish psychology would just pause for a second, take a breath and think about all the resources, tips, techniques, actions that are coming out of C19.
Please remember that what the world is experiencing is something disabled people have been experiencing for a very long time. Ask your psychology colleagues with disabilities what they think helps with high risk of illness, anxiety about health, social isolation.
Don’t yet again push these people and their experiences to the margins.
For me- knowing that I am “high-risk” right now means I have a huge set of additional concerns and a whole lot more to process emotionally.
Psychology, are you supporting those most at risk of C19 or are you making assumptions based on normative psychology that doesn’t account for disabled people as a marginalised group and speaking on behalf of?
Please, when you set up the next resource, initiative, or guidance, please make sure it incorporates marginalised disabled voices.
And if you feel an urge to be the person known for saving the world psychologically during covid- perhaps have a think about who you’re focused on saving and why.
I’m personally never going to forget the hero’s that saved the world by washing their hands and staying home.
