I’ve worked in care for 10 or so years now. Literally dedicated my life to looking after others. I find it incredibly rewarding and not without its stresses.
We’re told not to get too attached to the people we look after but honestly, how can you not? You on occasion spend 50+ hours with them a week, it’s impossible not to, you care about them, otherwise you wouldn’t be here.
During all this COVID-19 pandemic I still have to work, I still want to work, I’m still here but I’m so so tired. I’ve never worked so hard before to ensure someone doesn’t get sick. My hands hurt from washing them so much...
My head hurts from worrying about others in our small, but close team for fear they might get the virus and unknowingly become sick and pass it on.
We’re being as vigilant as possible, we’ve gone down to working alone where possible and only crossing paths during a changeover but I’m so tired. Literally counting the days until this is all over and we can get back to some sort of a normal.
The two guys I support have no clue what’s going on. They’re more than happy being at home but they can’t tell us if they feel unwell, we have to figure that out for them.
For my sake, for their sake, for the rest of the people I work with and we support, #StayHome unless you really really have to go out. I’d like to get to the other side of this without any of my team or people we support getting sick at all.
