[Music Thread] @MeeMeera and I have run two sessions of Carnatic 101 and covered ragas Kalyani, Bageshree, Atana, Abheri and Mohanam. Meera has also prepared and shared a playlist. Now I will play some songs which are not in these playlists.
'joharu sikipincha mouli' from Sri Krishna Vijayam Susheela's voice, Hemamalini dancing, CNare's lyrics and Pendyala's music
This is based on raga Atana.
'thotalo naa raju' from 'Ekaveera'. Sung by Susheela & Gantasala. Music of KV Mahadevan. I think lyrics were by CNare but not sure.
If you haven't guessed it already, this based on Kalyani ragam
Next song from the movie, 'Buddhimanthudu'. Sung by Gantasala. Music by KVM
This song is based on Mohanam. The first line is taken from 'nanu palimpa' a Tyagaraja krithi in Mohanam
'jao jao nand ke lal' from 'Rangoli'. Lata's voice. Music by the redoubtable Roshan. Those who hate Lata must listen to songs like this to know why we worship her.
Based on Bageshri ragam
'chinnan chiru vayadhil' from Mendum Kokila. Yesudas and Shailaja. Raja's music. I think Panju Arunachalam was the lyricist.
This is based on Abheri. (Just a word of caution. Abheri has a troubled history. What we know as Abheri is probably Karnataka Devagandhari. Will explain in next session. For now, Abheri, Karnataka Devagandhari and Bhimplas we will assume as equivalent)
'kaise kate rajani'. One of the few times that musician extrodinaire, Ustad Amir Khan, agreed to sing for a film. Music by another great musician, Ali Akbar Khan.
For the movie 'Kudito Pashan'. The female singer is Pratima Banerjee. Bageshree was made for Amir Khan's voice. No one can deny that. KVN's voice down south is probably the one made for Bageshree
'jor meedunnavu thummada' from 'Sivaranjani'. Sung by Susheela. Music of Ramesh Naidu.
Based on Kalyani
'madilo veenalu mroge' from 'Aatmeyulu'. Susheela in top form. Saluri in top form as well as the MD.
Based on Mohanam
The charming 'na bole na bole' by Lata. From 'Azad'. Music by C Ramachandra. Ramachandra was in top form those times
Ramachandra adapts Bageshree wonderfully to give us this joyful song
Now to classical style. Maharajapuram with the Atana krithi, 'todu raara' of Tyagaraja.
'kaka thamburati', the famous Malayam song. Lyrics of Vyalar. Music by Dakshinamurthy swami. Sung by Yesudas.
Based on Abheri. Dakshinamurthy Swami had a great way with ragas. He would adapt them wonderfully for films
Another Malayalam beauty. 'swarna chamaram' from Yakshi. Sung by P.Leela. The very famous Vyalar-Devarajan combination.
This amazing melody is based on Kalyani.
A sort of comic song. 'krishna nee varumo' from 'kuyilline thedi'. Music by Shyam. KJY and Jeyachandran. Lyrics: Chunakkara Ramankutty
Based on Mohanam. This gives you an idea on how film music directors can use a ragam in various situations.
'un manasula paatu dhaan' from 'Pandi Natu Thangam'. Mano and Chitra singing a Raja melody
This is based on Abheri but to be honest will be difficult to recognize immediately like a 'singara velane deva'.
A marathi natya sangeeth. The great Abdul Karim Khan. One of the pillars of the Kirana garana. 'prema seva' You can very easily identify the Bhimplasi (Abheri) in this
It will take some time for some of us to get used to this genre of music but once you do, you will be astonished by the singing of Abdul Karim Khan
'lalitha kalaradhanalo' from the movie 'Kalyani'. And yes, you guessed it. Based on Kalyani :)) Susheela's voice. Ramesh Naidu's music.
'innumente kannuneeril' by KJY Sreekumaran Thambi's lyrics, Raveendran Master's music. Movie 'yuvajanolsavam'
Bageshree based but the way it is delivered, I would not give this as an example of Bageshree.
The last song as I end this thread. 'abhi na jao chodkar' from Hum Dono. Rafi and Asha. Sahir's lyrics and Jaidev's music.
Amazing tune by Jaidev. Based on Kalyani, or Yaman as they call it up north @kbalakumar
