There has been a consistent decrease in Spousal violence against women from 97% in 2018, 82% in 2019 and 57% in 2020.

But the figures for Spousal violence for men have remained within the same range over the years and this might be because there are more interventions for women.

We have seen more men reporting in recent times but they have to be encouraged more. Because Spousal violence affects the victim's self-esteem and when they report they are made mockery of

We need to help report when we see cases of Spousal violence around us

Yes we understand that the police have several cases to handle but there has to be innovations in the methods of reporting.

In other parts of the world, police are developing secret codes where victims can place "silent/coded calls" for help.

In regards to mitigating the situation, a lot has to be done in enforcing the already existing laws and policies.

People need to see it as a crime punishable by law that is ENFORCABLE.

Idealistically, we are seeing Nigerians say it's NOT JUSTIFIABLE TO ABUSE AND/OR KILL THEIR SPOUSE

But it's still the same Nigerians abusing their SPOUSES.

The major cause of Domestic/Spousal violence is MISUNDERSTANDING and unlike in the past where one could use different stress relief methods like; stepping out or seeing a counselor, isn't quite accessible at the moment because of the lockdown

Marriage counseling should be a recurrent thing and the Nigerian courts should make it a requirement before marrying couples at the registry.
