#Pune #quiz Which well known road was originally called East-West Road (when it was first conceptualized)?

Will talk about some interesting history of this important road...after the answers.
Okay...only one correct answer thus far :) ... Thought this was easy. Hint - look at Pune's map.
The hint worked for many folks :) ... The answer is 'Laxmi Road'!

The 'East-West' street/road name lasted for a very short time, during the early years, when the road was first conceptualized (1911-12 time frame). Soon it was formally named as 'Laxmi Road'.

Laxmi Road was first conceptualized by Poona Municipality around 1911. As the city was growing, a need was felt to have a main road connecting through the city from one of the end of the city limit (Cantonment boundary) to the other end (Lakdi Pul).
At that time, all the old Peth areas had tiny lanes and by lanes, and no proper 'main road' as such.

The project was supported by the jewelry and other merchants - who saw this as a good development for their business. Hence the name 'Laxmi Road' (goddess of wealth) was picked.
Some parts of the road were easy to develop...but large parts needed major changes. Many old Wadas had to be demolished or partially encroached on, to build this road.

It was done in phases lasting over decades. The final stretch of the new Laxmi Road was completed around 1950.
