So Donald Trump today criticized the World Health Organization for the #COVID19 pandemic getting out of hand and said it didn't do enough in warning countries about it. And said it's "China-centric." But in reality, there's no one to blame but Trump himself. Here's a thread:
Let's go back to 2017. The Obama administration walked Trump officials about a hypothetical pandemic that would be worse than the 1918 Spanish flu. They KNEW there could be shortages of ventilators. 66% of the officials no longer serve in the White House #COVID19
In May 2018, Trump's biodefense preparedness team warned that a flu pandemic was the country's NUMBER ONE security threat. What did the administration do? Slowly dismantle the global health security office. Obama began it after the Ebola outbreak it and made it permanent #COVID19
In July 2019, the Trump administration ELIMINATED a public health position in Beijing that its main purpose was to detect disease outbreaks in China. Literally, a key position! #COVID19
The Trump administration ENDED a project called Predict that had been there since 2009. It had identified 160 different coronaviruses that had the potential to develop into pandemics. The president of EcoHealth Alliance said he didn't know why the initiative was scrapped.
On February 21, the WHO director general said the window of opportunity to act is narrowing and that the international community needs to act. On March 2 and March 5, he asked countries to act again.
At the end of January, Trump's economic adviser Peter Navarro circulated around the White House and federal agencies that unless U.S takes action, hundreds of thousands of Americans will die! Another memo was sent in February as well
All throughout January, both the CDC and Trump were being warned about a virus. Instead, Trump asks HHS Secretary Azar to focus on vaping. WHO declared it as an public health emergency in JANUARY and recommended early detection, isolating and treating cases, and social distsncing
Deputy National Security Adviser Pottinger called for a more forceful response from Trump in early February but Treasury Secretary Mnuchin resisted. Feb. 10 he said it'll be fine. Feb. 19 Trump says it's going to work out fine by April. Feb. 24 he said US has it under control.
February 28: Donald Trump calling the coronavirus the Democrats' new hoax in a political rally
In fact, Trump kept downplaying #COVID19 in tweets end of February and beginning of March. On March 24, when nations are locking down - Trump wanted to open up the country on April 12 for Easter which would be in 5 days.
The fact is Trump kept downplaying the coronavirus, called it a flu several times, said the number of cases will soon be 0, blamed it on everyone but himself, and took too long to take considerable action in combatting #COVID19.
