So I think there’s a fine line between obsession and just genuinely liking something and appreciating its quality. And finding something you like and wanting to know all about it is also not obsession. I’ll be honest, when I first discovered bts, I was obsessed for a while
until I got a boyfriend. He made me realize that it was ok to like their music and like them as people, but having them on my mind all day wasn’t healthy at all. To this day I still like them and their music. But I’m not about to even make a stan account. Not because I think
it’s “wrong”, do whatever you want, be happy, whatever. I just think making someone or something your sole happiness is so wrong.
Lately I’ve been getting into the lunch club and I’ve been tweeting about them and talking about them a lot. They’re good people and their content is great, especially to just have on in the background. And there’s just so much content to cover. Not that I’m making myself
watch or listen to it all, it’s simply because I want to. But I wouldn’t say I’m obsessed. They’re people too. I know schlatt’s talked about it before, that people aren’t built to be put on pedestals and obsessed over and I truly do agree with that. Like, think about it.
You’re just creating content that makes you happy, and you suddenly have a large audience paying attention to everything you do and say. They take screenshots of your every move and you just have the closest eye on you. It probably feels trapping, right?
I just think it’s crazy how people will look at obsession as something healthy and doing something good for the creator. There needs to be something in your life besides your favorite “idol”. Looking at youtubers as gods or something is insane. They have their lives too.
It’s none of our dang business. They will share what they want to share and it’s our job to take it as it is and appreciate them and their work. Let’s enjoy the content that they are proud of and put out there because they’re happy with it.
Stan culture is really weird from an outside perspective. Like when you’re in there you just think you’re with your community, analyzing every piece of data you’re given about your favorite thing. But to other people, you just seem crazy.
And I know there are normal stans out there who are genuinely just there to appreciate their thing. But I just feel like people need to understand that just bc they’re more popular doesn’t mean they can handle pressure any better than the rest of us.
It would be terrifying to me if a group of people were just staring at me, waiting to make a move that they could just over analyze and obsess over for days or weeks. Especially when you’re doing it just bc it makes you happy. It seems like an extra weight and pressure
that just seems so unnecessary. Yes, it’s okay to have a dedicated fan base. No, it’s not okay when said fan base treats you like something better than human or worse, like a slice of meat or something.
There’s always going to be crazy people out there. I know that some can be easily ignored or whatever. But man, people aren’t invincible. There’s only so much one can take before feeling intense pressure.
I guess what I’m saying here is please, just treat your faves as people. Don’t take multiple screenshots per video of the same person. Don’t spam their comments or their chat just to get them to notice you. Be respectful and kind. That’s all they ask for.
Thanks for coming to my ted talk nobody, because nobody reads these.
