Some friends recently gave me the opportunity to put this into words: I started studying econ bc I bought into the discipline's self-aggrandizement, i.e. maybe it is better than the other social sciences, maybe it is more relevant & applicable
& as someone whose undergrad was sociology-heavy (quant sociology research project at UMich & interdisciplinary but essentially qual sociology thesis at my undergrad Amherst College), it's been cringe-y to witness economists jokingly (& not) disparage sociologists particularly
Now that I can speak econ lingo, on at least a basic level, I see this is absolutely not the superior social science. It's just another useful social science. That's it. I stan economists. But I also stan sociologists, political scientists, psychologists, etc.
& I stan folks trained in interdisciplinary programs (i.e. public policy, social policy, education). I get being trained in 1 discipline, bc even in interdisciplinary programs you specialize in 1, but at least in those contexts, drawing from various disciplines is more encouraged
& then research is richer for that, for having drawn from various frameworks across disciplines. Also disciplines bleed into each other. Some econ is quant sociology and some quant sociology is econ. & one might get into the whole qual vs quant debate. Which, spare me.
I've realized both are valuable & compliment each other. I'm just here to do good mixed-methods research that makes it possible to create & sustain good policies. I've made peace w social science in-fighting. Hoping more folks can get to this point.
