Alright so I have thoughts about this. I’m usually very weary of government support for religious institutions, mostly because I believe they’re likely to be directed toward white evangelical institutions disproportionately. That being said, this is an emergency. Assuming that https://twitter.com/archihoemo/status/1247699438128246784
this aid is distributed equitably, there are some good reasons to provide it. The primary one being that, like it or not, tax payers that don’t support religious institutions financially are benefiting from the humanitarian work done by religious organizations.
The works of churches such as providing shelter and food banks (the big ones) even some forms of rehabilitation reduce the tax burden on all Americans, because otherwise the government would need to fund these services. The government (and atheist tax payer) has a vested
economic interest in keeping churches and other religious organizations functioning, whether you agree with their beliefs or not. I’m not qualified to speak to the constitutionality of it all, but I know these are extreme circumstances.
wary** of course I made a typo at the very beginning of this thread...now I’m also weary.
