Online teaching and learning is nowhere close to direct methods. I am an educator and I have done both. Let's look at both stakeholders:
Teachers: There is no feedback. As an educator I adapt. Not all student batches are the same. So the same content cannot be taught the same way https://twitter.com/mtrajan/status/1247190485891866625
I gauge the student response and adapt. The "class" is an entity. There is an energy for the whole class. And that's what a teacher wants. I as a teacher have discovered new things when the whole class collaborates and learns. Its impossible right now in online learning.
There is no way a teacher can have that satisfaction while teaching online.
Teaching is a social activity. After a class I used to discuss with other teachers and then adapt my classes. Not possible online.
Now lets come to the student piece.
No software I have seen is better than YouTube for the way online learning is structured right now. All of them have some value adds, but mostly, they become just gatekeepers.
Learning is more of a social activity than teaching.
And that's completely missing in online tools. You can't be alone when learning. It's very lonely and only the most motivated get through .
I am already on the Internet and the Internet has everything available. Yet very few tools are actually connected to the Internet.
I join a virtual classroom and I am stuck in that classroom. Asking doubts, interacting with peers, joking about the teacher and the content, experimenting with ideas, everything is missing.
Almost no system allows a student to make a mistake and learn from the mistakes.
When I am teaching, I know the mistakes a student will make. But I let them make that mistake and use that opportunity to help them learn. Not possible with online tools.
So, we are stuck. Are we doomed? Actually not. The technology is there and the tools are there.
Now we have people willing to experiment. But someone has to rethink the whole strategy. And I have some ideas. But that's for another post :-)
But I will leave with a teaser. The one company which can actually crack the online education market:
