In 2003, Rep. John Conyers introduced the Expanded and Improved Medicare For All Act, a bill that would create a universal single-payer health care system. Conyers introduced the bill in each session of Congress until he resigned in December 2017.
Conyers was the first leader I ever heard mention Medicare For All, and introduced me to the concept of single-payer.
Since 1989, Conyers also repeatedly introduced HR. 40 a bill that would establish a commission to examine the institution of slavery in the U.S. and its early colonies, and recommend appropriate reparations.
By the way, Bernie Sanders was not a co-sponsor of Conyer's 2003 Medicare For All Bill. There were numerous folks like Elijah Cummings and Charlie Rangel who folks call establishment Dems who were. So chill on the elevating politicians into gods. They aint.
Conyers resigned his House seat in 2017 because of multiple sexual harassment allegations. The announcement came the day after a former staffer released an affidavit accusing Conyers of sexual harassment.
Rep John Lewis was a co sponsor of Conyers 2003 Medicare For All bill, Rep Bernie Sanders was not.
I say this to remind. Politicians are egos personified, weak human frailties with feet of clay. I support them according to the work they do and the values we share, but I never mistake them for being anything but a politician, a tool in the progress I want to see for my kids.
