I deleted my Facebook account and in return got a datafile with all of my previous photos. While living in Colombia I did a lot of travelling and spent a dumb amount of money bringing back bottles of rum from countries I visited. Here are a few notable bottles in a thread 👇
El Dorado 21 - Guyana

This is the best spirit on earth. Guyana is the home to demerara sugar, and the rum reflects that. It is the perfect mix of toasted brown sugar and toffee, but it does not taste sweet due to the oak. The balance is incredible. World class and worth it.
Dictador XO - Cartagena

Despite living in Medellin I had to buy this in Miami as the company does not sell domestically (all bottles in Colombia are fake). Most rum folk will say this is the best in the world. It tastes like coffee on butterscotch ice cream. Close second for me.
Diplomatico Reserva Exclusive - Venezuela

This is the best value rum on earth. Affordable for anyone, the rum opens up a ton with ice. The taste reminds me a lot of caramel on top of vanilla ice cream in a waffle cone, but it does not sit sweet due to a good after burn.
Zacapa XO - Guatemala

My wife's favourite. The rum comes from sugar cane honey that is produced at extremely high altitude in the east part of the country. More of a "nectar" than a spirit, this stuff can go down in a hurry. A fringe top three for me.
Dos Maderas - Barbados/Spain

A sneaky pick in my collection. Five year old rum from Barbados is shipped to Spain and finished for five years in PX Sherry casks. It is the only "Sherried Rum" on the market and is surprisingly easy to drink. A little too dessert-y for me, though.
Barcelo Imperial Premium - Dominican

Top shelf from Barcelo. Not my favourite sitting rum, but the spicy finish goes exceptionally well after a round of golf with a light cigar (Monte Cristo Blanco). Not a rum I would buy again for the price.
Brugal Siglo de Oro - Dominican

Top shelf for Brugal. The taste reminds me waking up after falling asleep on a Sunday in a leather recliner with my mouth open. Dry, leather and tabacco-y. Really over rated and expensive. I'd rather settle for the $8 anejo and lime.
Medellin - 30

Medellin is the best city on earth, but they do not do rum particularly well. I got this top of the line bottle more for the sake of having it in the collection than anything else. Much like aguardiente, this stuff is fierce. Immediately puts hair on your chest.
Clement XO - Martinique

I think that Ti Punch is the best liquor tradition on earth. However, when you take the bottle out of the environment, it just does not work. Super expensive for a mid line bottle, smells like tennis balls and tastes like fresh cut grass.
Flor de Cana 25 - Nicaragua

One of the most popular rums in the world. Produced in Chichigalpa, this rum ranks among the best in the world. It missed for me. Finished in oak casks, there is a super dry and spicy taste. This is one I think I will appreciate 10-15 years from now.
Centenario - Costa Rica

I don't know enough about the operation outside of San Jose to understand why there is so much hazelnut favour in this rum. I did not mind this bottle, but for the price point it warranted, the enjoyment did not line up. Still pretty solid.
Cartavio - Peru

Peru has the best food and drink on earth - and it is not close. However, they miss on rum. This rum was flat, dead and boring. Fortunately, numerous immaculate Pisco Sour's made up for it during my time in the country (personal favourite cocktail).
Honourable mentions I can't find photos of:

Cruzan Single Barrel (St Croix)
Angostura 1824 (Trinidad)
Juan Santos 18/24 (Colombia)

No idea if this provided any value for anyone, but it was a fun review of memories for me. Enjoy the evening. 🍻
