As I embark on this new job search (yes, you can hire me today) I plan to be much more ... discerning than the last time. I’m approaching it differently, and I’m looking for some specific things. #DevRel 1/13
First, integrity. I’ll start with my own. I know a lot of #DevRel folks recently laid off and looking. I’m not going to compete with my friends for jobs. If I know you’re applying, I probably won’t. People come first. 2/13
Integrity matters. Integrity is when your thoughts, your words, and your actions are all in alignment. If I say something, you can be pretty sure I mean it, I stand behind it, and I’ll act accordingly. And if I’m wrong I’ll admit it, and I’ll change my behavior #DevRel 3/13
People come first. I’m looking for a company this time where people really DO come first. Where integrity is high, and treating people right, no matter what, is the default. I miss that. Where THAT is the core value. #DevRel 4/13
Core values that are actually lived. Especially by the execs. Core values that are not just words on a website. Core values that are never weaponized. Core values that center people and honest communication. I will probe this relentlessly. #DevRel 5/13
Honest communication is encouraged, allowed, and celebrated. Even when it’s not pleasant, you don’t like the ‘tone’, or it brings up sensitive issues. In fact, ESPECIALLY then, because that’s how you get better! I will ask about this. Answer honestly. #DevRel 6/13
Being better is the goal. Not being the same. Not being ok. But being better than you were yesterday. Being better means making mistakes. It means listening. It means listening to things you don’t want to hear. I will test you on this. #DevRel 7/13
Things you don’t want to hear are they keys to moving forward. Did someone fuck up? Ok, listen to that person. Find out how it happened, so you can find out how you failed to support them and led to that fuck-up. #DevRel 8/13
Support them. Make it safe for them to speak up. If your employees can’t speak up, you will never know the true nature of your company. Ever. If you support them, they will stay. They will be loyal, and work harder. #DevRel 9/13
Look at turnover. Are key people leaving? Are lots of people leaving? There’s. A. Reason. For. That. And if you’re honest with yourself, and listen, it’s because there’s something going on in your company. I will look at turnover rate. #DevRel 10/13
Lastly, I will follow my gut. If I have a weird feeling about something or someone, I’ll investigate it. If it still doesn’t feel right, I’ll walk away. I’m looking for an honest company, with people of integrity that puts people first and 11/13
Encourages honest straightforward communication. If you don’t want to hear it, or you don’t like the ‘tone’ then you talk to ME about it. Up front. Honestly. Like an adult. Can’t do that? We won’t work well together. And if you have company values, 12/13
Then they apply to EVERYONE in the company equally and evenly. I’ll ask about this. I’ll ask how you plan to do this. I’ll hold you to it, so don’t try to bullshit your way through any of this. Because I’ve been through it and I’ll know. 13/13
