Today, cancer research has been deemed nonessential due to #COVID19. We wrote an essay that was just published
@Cancer_Cell about what issues we need to address as a global community as we recover. @colbertle @JAbiJaoudeMD @ebludmir @TaniguchiMD

Cancer researchers around the globe answered the call against the new pandemic to close their labs and all ongoing experiments in order #flattenthecurve and save our high-risk #oncology patients and each other.
3/
Many experiments were put on hold and important cell lines had to be sacrificed in order to shut down operations quickly and #stayathome . Any useful PCR reagents were donated to clinical labs and our own stockpiles of #PPE were given to the frontline workers.
4/
Not only was lab work affected, but many clinical trials stopped accruing patients and other patients were switched to standard of care therapies to minimize exposure. #COVID has shaken the cancer world to its core, but the fight against cancer does not wait @COVID19nCCC
5/
Obviously, this #CancerResearchShutdown will have a HUGE toll on our fight to #endcancer. It will take an incredible amount of effort, time, and investment to get back to the pre-COVID state. Meaning, many labs and #physicianscientists will be in a tough situation.

While important regulatory bodies like @FDAOncology @NIH @ASCO have offered guidance on how to proceed during these unprecedented times. Solutions like no-cost extensions, postponing grant deadlines, and tenure clock extensions are welcome, a lot remains to be addressed.
7/
Everyone is stressed now, including scientists. Faculty and scientists who are #singleparents, #WomenInScience , and minorities need immediate help with issues like child-care, mental health support, and even grant and publication assistance. A lot can be done!
8/
With the #CARESAct underway, many large corporations are receiving much needed aid, but science is not getting its fair share. It seems that we are repeating the mistakes of the past by undercutting scientific research at a time where evidence-based medicine is in high demand
9/
We owe it to our patients to practice social distancing in hope to #flattenthecurve, at the same time we call on regulatory and funding agencies to save the investments already made in the fight against cancer, and hope they #dontforgetthescientists.
