- As a trauma surgeon I’ve learned about how #Bullets act like infection from @GSlutkin. I’m wondering if y’all might stop and listen for a second to hear about how #Coronavirus is acting like a #Bullet. There is no mystery in why Black Folx are being disproportionately impacted
- The #coronavirus virus spreads through proximity and contact. Segregated and minoritized communities share a collective experience defined by race that has been fueled by centuries of policy and practice which worked to uphold the economic realities of slavery.
- Those same realities drive unequal access to health determinants like education, employment, housing, food, safety, transportation and healthcare. Black communities do not broadly enjoy the privilege of good health. Equity fails to thrive and an #InescapableRisk prevails.
- #COVID fuels the fire taking advantage of segregated poverty and chronic disease in the same spaces. Its virulence happily spreads to anyone who comes in contact with those at center of vulnerability. Just like “gang” violence and “drive-by’s” the virus hits who it hits.
- The biggest risk factor for #COVID19 infection and subsequent death is not race, it is racism. It is living in a country where #BlackBodies have simply never been as valued as #equal. If we have any hope in turning this tide, we must acknowledge this truth. #scrublikeasurgeon
