We've reached a strange moment in the pandemic: here in Washington state, we know that our social distancing is saving lives and helping the doctors and nurses on the front lines, but we're stuck in a kind of suspended animation while our efforts pay off. 1/x
We know that the despair that we're seeing on the news—people out of work, families going hungry—will only get worse. We don't know the size of the economic damage we're confronting; we only know that it's immense. 2/x
It's a scary and uncertain time. We've found consolation by keeping our eyes on the people who are taking this time to dream big -- people who see this moment as an opportunity to build an economy that's better, stronger, and more inclusive than the one we had two months ago. 3/x
We have to do everything we can in to support workers, families, and small business owners to ensure that everyone can emerge from isolation ready to fully participate in the economy. It’s the only way to stem the spread of this economic catastrophe. 4/x
That’s going to require courage by state and local leaders, and a steadfast resolve by all of us that austerity is not the answer. It's the siren call that will sink our ship -- prolonging the economic pain and delaying the recovery 5/x
The evidence from the Great Recession is clear: bigger state spending cuts = weaker economies. States that cut their budgets had slower growth, fewer jobs and longer recessions. Let's not repeat that mistake 6/x
The bravest thing we can do now is to honor the sacrifices of those who've suffered, learn from the mistakes that brought us here, and build a better future for everyone. 7/7
