Prime Minister Scott Morrison is making a ministerial statement in the House of Representatives. Parliament is sitting today to pass legislation for the $130 billion JobKeeper package.
Scott Morrison says Parliament is sitting in unusual circumstances and considering extraordinary responses to risk to the lives and livlihoods of Australians. "Today we act to protect Australia's sovereignty."
Scott Morrison: Our sovereignty is measured in our capacity and freedom to live our lives as we choose, in a free, open and democratic society. We are not coerced society.
Scott Morrison: Our sovereignty is demonstrated by the quality of life we afford Australians, with world-class health, education, disability, aged care, and a social safety net that
guarantees the essentials that Australians rely on. We will not surrender this.
The PM: Make no mistake, today is not about ideologies. We check those at the door. Today is about defending and protecting Australia's national sovereignty.
The PM says his promise to Australians is to rebuild and restore after the coronavirus crisis. "It will be a fight. It will be a fight we will win. But it won't be a fight without cost, or without loss."
The PM gives condolences to Labor MP Ged Kearney over the loss of her father-in-law. There are 5956 coronavirus cases in Australia, 294 in hospitalm 92 in intensive care and 32 people on ventilators.
Scott Morrison: "We are flattening the curve. We are buying ourselves precious time in this fight."
The PM on Easter: "Stay home, don't travel, don't go away. We can't let up now."
