okay guys, i have finished the good kid m.A.A.d city in depth album review for celebrating 250 followers! enjoy this thread. tell me what you guys think!
1. sherane (aka master slinter's dauhter) - 9.25/10 - this song is such a beautiful intro. right into the mind of kendrick as an adolescent, with sex on his mind. i really feel empathy for kendrick as the cold beat plays as he rhymes about his temptress sherane. phenomenal.
2. bitch, don't kill my vibe - 8.5/10 - i really adore this song. kendrick is just doing what he wants to do - chilling, vibing - while looking at the influence of his career. kendrick is enjoying himself, and i really vibe with that.
3. backseat freestyle - 9.5/10 - amazing song. kendrick is just talking about whatever the fuck he wants to! talking about his ego and he wants to fuck the world for 3 days. the energy is a mood!
4. the art of peer pressure -9.5/10- i love the transition from backseat freestyle to this track. from singing in the back seat to lamenting about peer pressures... i love the poetic nature of kendrick speaking about the tension he feels to do things with friends. it's beautiful.
5. money trees - 10/10 - this song is just beautiful; so addictive. kendrick just talks about his beliefs and principles surrounding his life, desires, problems, woes and money. the hook is so catchy. the entire song is catchy. so beautiful.
6. poetic justice - 8/10 - sex-driven song about the poetry behind a woman's features... what isn't there to love? i like this song a lot but the only thing that brings it down for me is it gets a lil boring... other than that, this song is great!
good kid - 10/10 - i LOVE this song. it's wonderful... kendrick knows he is a good mannered kid and he is trying to get out the hood! it's like he is the light surrounded by the evil. he needs to shine his light, get away from his nemeses. but, it's easier said than done.
m.A.A.d city - 10/10 - this song is crazy. from the pressure of guns, drugs, toxic friends and all sorts of other atrocities in kendrick's environment, this energy driven hit really brings out the emotional side of kendrick. the flows are impeccable.
swimming pools (drank) - 9.5/10 - beautifully immersive journey into kendrick's mind about his beliefs surrounding alcohol and how the people around him talk about it filling emotional voids. the flows, beat and lyrics on this track are amazing; i love it.
sing about me, i'm dying of thirst - 10/10 - so much symbolism, realism and beautiful storytelling of struggles from one person's perspective, another one's perspective and then kendrick's perspective. then how religion is the concept tied up in the end... art.
11. real - 10/10 - the mature realisation that loving yourself and being real to yourself is a priority... told in such a poetic way. kendrick struggles, kendrick desires, 'but what love got to do with it when you don't love yourself'. powerful, passionate words.
12. compton - 8/10 - a great celebratory track, that - instead of hating the struggles - it values them. kendrick overcomes struggles and pressure. he grows through them. i love that.
13. the recipe - 9/10 - the recipe to a life in LA... i thought this was a fun song, because it has such positive vibes and something that everybody could relate to.
14. black boy fly - 9.5/10 - this is kendrick promoting and appreciating the prosperity for his brothers and sisters in compton... loving them and respecting them. what's not to like? this is catchy, fun and meaningful.
15. now or never - 9.5/10 - a really upbeat, happy song, celebrating kendrick's success and his willingness to continue growing. i adore it!
bdkmv remixes - the one with jay z goes hard, 10/10 for the emotional energy in that song. such a vibe, kendrick and jay having fun. the international remix, however, felt a little unneeded. it is decent, quite enjoyable, but it isn't too intriguing. 7/10 for that.
overall this album is phenomenal. a beautiful piece of art that tells the story of kendrick as an adolescent, but the lessons learnt are for his entire life. we can learn from this album. it is honestly educational. no matter what you're struggling through, you will grow.
