One of the interesting things that came out of this thread is the lack of agreement on what's a good and readable font. If you're running a journal, what do you choose? @leouieda pointed out something important. https://twitter.com/manenbu/status/1247426259556032512
Our current paper reading system is based on people downloading PDFs. A lot of reading is done online these days, but paywalls are a strong inhibitor. eg if I already have the PDF, I can read it anywhere anytime. If you want to read the online version, you need access.
Even if you have institutional access, it requires logging in and entering passwords. Good luck typing my password on the tiny keyboard on my years'-old iPhone... Abolishing paywalls (or finding ways to automate this) could solve the problem.
Once you have easily accessible online papers, have a dropdown box where you can select "serif", "sans serif", "dyslexia friendly". Wouldn't that be amazing? Journals can pick which fonts exactly to have their own style, but at least you're covering everyone.
