For @voxdotcom, I took a deep dive into why and how Covid-19 is disparaging black communities based on the data we have. The bigger question I wanted to answer: Will white America just move on after a certain point and what will that mean for black people? https://www.vox.com/identities/2020/4/7/21211849/coronavirus-black-americans">https://www.vox.com/identitie...
To understand why we are being hit the hardest look no further than structural racism. It has made us sick for forever. Now for many of us, as Covid-19 makes its rounds, it’s just too late. Social distancing isn& #39;t an option when you& #39;re stuck on the hamster wheel of poverty.
On Monday, not only did Louisiana release data by race, but the state also released a list of the leading underlying conditions in their positive Covid-19 patients: hypertension, diabetes, chronic kidney disease, and obesity.
A hypertension expert I interviewed pointed out that we are likely seeing a number of young black people succumb to Covid-19 because some of us may be walking around unaware that we have some of these underlying conditions.
There’s also a lot to learn from the fight against HIV and also pandemics past like 1918 influenza. Though black people had lower rates of influenza, white people still found a way to say we were the disease threats.
So what happens some months from now when white America recovers from Covid-19 but black communities are still being terrorized?
