#WisconsinPrimary, A Thread

Still fired up about this #PandemicPrimary , so instead of being angry on twitter, I decided to do the thing I have a degree in, mathematics. So, here are some numbers I crunched

1/12
Voter Estimates (per the WI Elections Commission site)

Registered Voters City of Milwaukee - 289,435

Absentee voters (Estimate based on 2018 gen. election in Milwaukee County) 20% of voters. If the same percentage is applied to City of Milwaukee, that is 57,887 voters

2/12
Polling Station Estimates

5 Polling Stations for City of Milwaukee

Polls open from 7 am to 8 pm (13 hours, 780 min)

21 Polling Booths per site (based on Riverside High School Station)

Avg. Voting time in booth 5 min (Based on online estimate, 3rd district ballot)

3/12
The Math,

Using the number of registered voters in the City of Milwaukee, minus the estimated absentee voters, that would mean there are 231,548 in-person voters in the City of Milwaukee today.

Evenly distributed among 5 stations, that is 46,309 voters per polling site.

4/12
Take those 46,309 voters per site and the approx. 21 voting booths per site, we will operate under the assumption that 21 people vote every 5 minutes, the average time it takes to vote.

Divide 46,309 voters by 21 and you get roughly 2205 groups of 21 voters.

5/12
Assuming we expected every person to vote, multiply 2205 groups by 5 minutes and it would take 11,025 minutes for every person at a site to vote in the election.

That is 183 hours for every voter to have their voice heard.

6/12
Many might say 5 min is too long for turnover. For argument's sake, let's say it takes each person 2 min to fill out a ballot.

Adjusting for that new time, it would take 4,410 min for every voter to make it through the polls in those groups of 21.

That's 73.5 hours.

7/12
Voters are given 13 hrs.

Call it 15 hrs since the lines close at 8 pm and everyone who is in line still gets to vote.

That means voters have ~1/5 of the time needed to get everyone through the system.

This is also assuming maximum efficiency at each site.

Discrepancies in my work

Yes, I have done a lot of estimating in my work. This is not a doctoral thesis, I wanted to put some numbers behind the absurdity of this election. There are a lot of variables, but I wanted to provide a picture of the situation, it isn't perfect.

9/12
In a well-run democracy, we would expect our officials to make sure that every vote is counted, every voice is heard.

That is what we do not see in Milwaukee today. These officials are actively silencing the voices of the people they claim to represent. It is shameful.

10/12
Any elected official should be fighting for every single vote to be accounted for.

If your mindset isn't getting as many people voting as possible, you should not be in an elected office.

11/12
If you have more accurate data, or if you have issues with my work, let me know. My opinions change in light of new information.

I can provide sources for my numbers/work as well. If you aren't respectful, I will ignore you.

Every Vote Counts.
