Somehow I'm not surprised to see Papa is anti-suffragist in Ella of All-of-a-Kind Family. He acts like he won the lottery at the end of the first book when he finally gets a penis-bearer after five girls in a row, & gasses on about how awesome it is to have a male heir elsewhere.
The high school boys in this book, set in 1919, are little pricks too, constantly vandalizing the girls' posters when Henny decides to run for school officer, & disrupting the debate with more mockery and misogyny.
And seriously, Mama telling Charlotte Papa would give her the worst beating of her life if she thought Charlotte gave a cousin a shitty haircut on purpose? WTF!? A beating over a damn haircut?! Papa already spanked Henny's friend Fanny by mistake in the second book!
Worst of all is Jules pressuring Ella into giving up a budding singing and vaudeville career to be a full-time wife and mother. Ella later says, in all seriousness, there's great joy in drudgery like washing dishes. I doubt Jules would choose housework over a career!
