HXH THREAD: HUNTER EXAM
Just sharing my thoughts during my rewatch
The hunter exam is a very good introductory arc, which has inspired many shows after it.
Although many people seem to put off by the show having upbeat music and bright colours, I rather enjoyed the mix of eeriness aswell as the adventure feeling it gave off.
I was hooked from the first episode the first time I watched, maybe it was because it was mostly about building the characters we get to love early on in clever ways so they become characters with depth instead of cliche personalities.
We get to learn their flaws pretty quickly, which is why they aren’t cliche(the flaws get more noticeable the further you get). For example, Kurapika is first shown as an emo character but we get to know pretty quickly that he is for the most part cheerful, and a cool guy
The phases were a very good way to get to know the cast since you put them in tough situations, and you learned how they’d react. What I love about this arc particularly is that it basically sets up the next three arcs, which is very impressive.
The phases the characters had to go through were all very creative, especially the first three ones. The first phase was a clever way for Togashi to give depth to some of the characters by giving backstory without it feeling out of place, since they could only run and talk.
Killua and Gon, and seeing their friendship start and grow is probably my favorite part of this arc(maybe show!). You’d think Killua is the one with the issues but you notice Gon got flaws just as big, even if they’re not as noticeable, which are later explored further on.
Killua early on is a showoff badass but as the phases are cleared he realizes he wants out of the assassins life and become friends with Gon and go from there. You see him have emotions, such as anger, joy etc. His inner conflicts sets up the next arc which is a good way to do it
Hisoka who is one of my favorite antagonists, is such a perfect first “villain” since he gives us stakes in the show. Gon started off pretty strong( ex catching the fish) and him meeting Hisoka was the perfect way to show how small he really is.
Hisoka himself has a great balance of being interesting and being terrifying, he’s so mysterious and his twisted personality is what I love about him. He is chaotic and goes by his own rules, a morally grey character which we see alot of in HxH.
A lot of people here seem to think you need backstory to be a great character which is BS imo. You need good characterization, backstory doesn’t necessarily have to be used. Instead you can focus on creating an intriguing personality which HxH often does.
When people call HxH a show with “asspulls” they often refer to nen, and how it suddenly appeared. Togashi actually hinted at the powersystem several times in this arc, and it’s reasonable that it’s not that known.
Finally I’d like to say I really enjoyed rewatching this since you pick up alot more than when you watch it blind. This was mostly surface level since its hard to write detailed in 280 characters lmao. Idk if imma continue this but it was fun to do
