/ One of my first TA experiences was for a course called "Cultural Diversity in Health & Illness". It was pretty awful for lots of reasons.
/When the professor noted that the students were predominantly White and mostly women, I asked if we would be talking about race, power, and privilege.
/ I was told they were & #39;too young to get it& #39; and (as traditional undergraduates) & #39;they didn& #39;t have any life experience& #39;.
/ Five years have passed. I& #39;m now overseeing an honors section for that same course. They& #39;re traditional undergrads (freshmen even), mostly White, and the majority identify as women. We& #39;ve talked about identity and privilege and some of the ways
/ power and privilege can impact the nurse-patient relationship. Many of the conversations have been uncomfortable; some difficult. We& #39;re figuring it out together.
/ when classes transitioned to online, students were concerned about the ability to complete their group projects. I came up with some alternatives.
/In the midst of that, @Rgleblan shared with @UMAnursing faculty information about the #FSNEEQUITYCHALLENGE I signed up and offered my section of students the option to do the same as an alternative to my alternative assignments and to write some reflective journals
/I suspected a few of the students would be interested. In going to grade assignments from last week, discovered 13 of 16 students have chosen to take part in the #FSNEEQUITYCHALLENGE
/ I just spent some time reading reflections from Week 1 and am speechless. Their reflections are powerful and heartfelt. I am grateful for their willingness to share their experiences, even when it& #39;s uncomfortable.
/ I wish the faculty person who dismissed students& #39; ability to engage with these topics could see this group& #39;s brave work. (The other assignments they could have done were easier, by far!) I& #39;m inspired by their courage and honored to be on this journey with them.
