1/ Daily Update

Rumor

* I've received multiple messages today asking about travel documents to prove one is going to work. This has not been ordered. I've also received multiple phone calls on what is now allowed. Common sense is the rule - idea is not to congregate ...
2/ Looking forward

* For the past few days, I've been researching how to rebound economically & socially. Unfortunately, there are no good answers.
* 1st, the public will need to realize the peak doesn't mean restrictions will lift & life will be normal. There will be a down ..
3/ slope. If it's an even slope, that will mean 2 months of down slope.
* 2nd, public health experts are warning us of a 2nd wave of infections once restrictions are lifted.
* 3rd, they're warning us even if we're successful in clamping down, the virus may return in the fall ..
4/ * So, if it's true that we will be dealing Covid for the rest of the yr, how do we rebound? The easiest answer is developing a vaccine - unlikely to occur this yr. Herd immunity is the only other remedy, but that would mean 50-70% need to become infected ...
5/ * The likely scenario is a series of lifting restrictions then re-imposing.
* A hypothetical: A local employer has 100 employees on a floor. They've been shut down for weeks. In mid-May they're allowed to open. A wk later, an employee becomes sick. The employer will have 2 ...
6/ choices: stay open & potentially risk having whole workforce sick or close down again. I suspect every employer/non-profit/church/govtt will decide to shut down.
* To help employers under this scenario, we'll need a robust testing system that includes (1) an antibody test ...
7/ which would in theory allow that person to work free of risk & (2) a rapid test for the virus so that we can contact trace & isolate. When that type of infrastructure will be available is uncertain.
* This open/close option is contingent upon (a) the virus not mutating, ...
8/ (b) the assumption that recovered people are immune is true, & (c) the immunity lasts some time. This option also assumes the public supports movement over the resulting infections/deaths.
* Ultimately, we all, employers & employees, just need to prepare for the unknown.
9/ Legislature is mtg

* I don't want to be in a room w 130 people from all over the state. However, govt won't be able to run past June 30 if we don't pass a continuing resolution. I'll attend as it's my job. I agree w leadership that now is better than taking the chance in May.
10/ New cases/deaths

* DHEC announced 187 new cases, totaling 2,417 & 3 new deaths, totaling 51.
* Pickens Co. had 1 new known positive, increasing total to 21.
* SC's doubling death rate is going the right way - it is extended to 6 days ...
11/ Finally

* I'll be hosting a Facebook Live Q&A tomorrow at 7-8pm on my political page. Joining me will be Sheriff Rick Clark, Mayor Butch Womack, Superintendent Danny Merck, & County Administrator Ken Roper.
* If you have any questions, feel free to post here or DM me ...
12/ Opinion - It’s the pandemic that hurts the economy, not the things we do to try to contain it. Have faith in our country, brilliant people who are going to develop vaccines & tests, our economy & each other. We're going to improve in 100s of areas. Take advantage of home time
