THREAD (because this is a thing that us journos do now when a story comes out!):
My first time working with @jolingkent, who interviewed @ericsyuan as part of his apaology tour.

It’s @zoom_us’s world now. We just all live in it.
No, seriously: this week I was invited to a Zoom seder, a Zoom happy hour, and more this week.
Zoom seems to have now gotten the message and is trying—really trying—to fix things.

Literally as I was finishing up this piece late last night I had to ask an Oakland kindergarten teacher to please remove the passwords to Zoom calls from a publicly-accessible website. https://www.nbcnews.com/tech/tech-news/every-day-crisis-zoom-boosts-its-security-scrutiny-grows-n1178396
"Nobody, you know, expected this,” @ericsyuan said. "Our business was beautiful, serving the enterprise and business customers who normally have an IT team to help you to configure the security settings.” https://www.nbcnews.com/tech/tech-news/every-day-crisis-zoom-boosts-its-security-scrutiny-grows-n1178396
This is probably the most telling quote from @jolingkent’s interview with him.
And that’s the fundamental problem: most city council officials and kindergarten teachers realisitically don’t have IT departments that have enough time to hold their hands. https://www.nbcnews.com/tech/tech-news/every-day-crisis-zoom-boosts-its-security-scrutiny-grows-n1178396

The other crazy part of this story, which we only touched on at the end, is that @ericsyuan came out of Webex.
He built Zoom to be a rival product. So far, it’s been largely successful. But Webex is trying to roar back. https://www.nbcnews.com/tech/tech-news/every-day-crisis-zoom-boosts-its-security-scrutiny-grows-n1178396

In fact, @ericsyuan’s old pals at Webex (now owned by Cisco) have not been hesitant to criticize Zoom.
Here’s a few lines that were cut for length from an earlier draft.
A Cisco VP called Zoom’s approach “derelict cowboy engineering."

Bottom line: Zoom is probably safe more most things.
Hackers, if you really want to disrupt my happy hour, nothing really bad will happy. I’ll be annoyed, sure. (But, please don’t!)
But that’s what infosec people call “threat modeling.” https://www.nbcnews.com/tech/tech-news/every-day-crisis-zoom-boosts-its-security-scrutiny-grows-n1178396

But if you’re, say, a school teacher in an overstretched district (hello, Oakland!) and YOUNG STUDENTS are now using this thing daily, the potential for harm goes WAY up.
I’d like to believe that @ericsyuan
and Zoom now appreciate that more than ever. https://www.nbcnews.com/tech/tech-news/every-day-crisis-zoom-boosts-its-security-scrutiny-grows-n1178396

It was a pleasure to work with @jolingkent. And the indefatigable @JasonAbbruzzese is a great editor!
I’m still going to use Zoom/Webex/etc. I have to. It’s what we do now. But I do hope these fixes will last. https://www.nbcnews.com/tech/tech-news/every-day-crisis-zoom-boosts-its-security-scrutiny-grows-n1178396

Plus, Zoom pub trivia last Saturday night was a fun diversion.
