This puts the ‘ethics’ of history in a striking perspective. (Horkheimer, 1934, cited in Lowy, Fire Alarm, 2016, p.12) @Justice2History @alexisstones1 @JJtodd1966 @Marnie_HW @ls_gibson @belsenmemorial @UCL_Holocaust
“The relation between today and yesterday is not a unilateral one: in an eminently dialectical process, the present illuminates the past and the illuminated past becomes a force in the present” (Lowy, 2016, p.39).
One of the great things about this book is that exposition of Benjamin’s theses from 1940 is combined with reiteration of their concerns in the light of the author’s present. Here we see the arrow of time reconfigured in millennial/cinquecentennial Brazil (Lowy, 2005, p.93).
