Tomorrow, Bob Marley and the Wailers may find themselves on Passover playlists, mainly Exodus and Redemption Song. These songs have a particular meaning when you are from the Jamaican and Jewish communities...1/
They sound like they allude to the Passover story yet are much more than that. They are calls to arms, political anthems to motivate the needed energy for social justice. Exodus: the stabbing bassline & the repetitive emphasised use of "move" are there to arouse you to action 2/
Both were rooted in black empowerment, calling for the strength and unity amongst the diaspora, influenced by Marcus Garvey. Redemption Song, an acknowledgement that you can be free and still be enslaved. These are not feel good songs about a joyful journey to freedom. 3/
Reflecting on his own mortality & energised by his political ideals, these are songs of freedom and the fight for humanity progressed by drawing strength from within & in unity with others for the emancipation of others. Listen, sing & remember these messages for Passover 4/4
