What started as a dangerous trend w/r/t the Trump admin’s implementation of the #CARESAct has now reached playbook status.

Step 1: Green-light temporary aid to workers in the lege text

Step 2: Issue regulatory guidance to severely restrict eligibility/coverage on the back end https://twitter.com/pelhamprog/status/1247177539774226435
This on UI comes on the heels of a similar move to severely restrict the paid sick & paid leave parts of the law: https://twitter.com/rebeccavallas/status/1245498907624378372?s=21 https://twitter.com/rebeccavallas/status/1245498907624378372
This is both dangerous and counterproductive because it needlessly limits the number of struggling workers & families who’ll get help when we should be trying to maximize—not minimize—reach, while also limiting the urgently needed macroeconomic stimulus effects.
But it’s also hugely counterproductive & harmful b/c it sucks up huge amounts of advocate resources when we need all hands on deck working on #CARESAct2—not tied up fighting to expand criminally narrow implementation of the law already on the books.
I’ve been saying it a lot lately... but once again: IT DOESN’T HAVE TO BE THIS WAY.
Treasury’s insistence on making millions of the most economically & medically vulnerable people in the U.S. needlessly file tax returns to get their emergency payments—and all the advocacy required to push them on this—is another Grade A example:
