A hospitalization update:
Covid-19 patients hospitalized statewide: 3,680/
We have 28,000 hospital beds in IL (not including alternate care facilities like McCormick Place, Vibra Hosp in SPI), 2,700 of which are ICU beds.
Today’s #COVID19 numbers for Illinois:

- 1,287 more positive cases than yesterday
- 13,549 total positive cases (some have recovered)
- 73 more deaths (a huge spike and byfar the worst day)
- 380 total deaths
- 77/102 counties
- 68,732 people tested statewide
. @GovPritzker says Calif Gov. @GavinNewsom sent Illinois 100 ventilators overnight, and that he vows IL will pay it forward to other states who experience COVID-19 peaks after IL's peak (still predicted for April 16 https://capitolfax.com/2020/04/06/illinois-death-projection-again-revised-upward/)
"No magic quantity of ventilators will solve COVID-19 for us," @GovPritzker says, noting IL has received 600 ventilators from the fed gov't, 300 of which are for Chicago. Gov notes IL has placed orders for 3,620 ventilators so far.
. @IDPH Dir. Dr. Ngozi Ezike says her agency has deployed a survey to COVID-19 positive Illinoisans w a 40% response rate. "Of all the people who responded who are seven days after their positive test result, 43% indicated that they have recovered."
In the last week, 2 males in their 20s have died (both in Cook Co), + a handful in their 30s, according to @idph data. And of course we had the devastating death of the infant who had tested positive for Covid-19, though exact cause of death still unknown https://twitter.com/TinaSfon/status/1247613304203247618?s=20
Asked whether law enforcement should be encouraged to arrest people violating the stay-at-home order, @GovPritzker says no. But he does encourage calling cops on any gatherings people might see, stating again that the "vast majority" of Illinoisans are abiding by order.
Elsewhere in the U.S. and the world, doctors have been forced to split ventilators between two patients. @GovPritzker says that should be an absolute last resort, though hospital administrators have apparently told whichever reporter asked the Q that they're prepared to do that.
Re: the suggestion that "herd immunity" should be considered as a tactic to get ahead of Covid-19 ( https://capitolfax.com/2020/04/07/rep-wilhour-wants-discussion-about-herd-immunity/) @GovPritzker says it's "an invitation for us to just let people die. And I won't do that. I will not do that."
Would IL reopen certain counties not hit hard by Covid-19?
"Just because you haven't had a case in your county" doesn't mean they're not there and will spread.
"We need to we need to get much further along here before we start talking about a regional or statewide stand-down."
Asked when gig economy workers/independent contractors can apply for unemployment insurance ( @IllinoisIDES still not allowing for that as system still overwhelmed) as allowed by federal Covid-19 relief package, @GovPritzker doesn't answer, looking instead to more fed relief ahead
