Populated by many misleading naïve theories, a difficulty understanding the foundations of scientific expertise and conversely, a tendency to trust one’s own intuitions too much and ignore one’s own ignorance… 2/10
…a built-in myside bias, paranoid tendencies, a propensity to simplify when remembering and to exaggerate when communicating, the human mind’s evolved complexion is little predisposed to form and communicate accurate scientific beliefs … https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="😱" title="Face screaming in fear" aria-label="Emoji: Face screaming in fear"> 3/10
But this needs not be the end of the story. The cognitive proclivities that cause scientific information to be distorted over the course of cultural transmission can be leveraged to favor accurate belief formation… 4/10
Science communicators can for instance resort to framing to maximize intuitiveness and memorability of scientific information in relatively controlled ways… 5/10
And laypeople’s myside bias and illusion of expertise can be overcome by science communicators motivated to engage with them actively and directly. 6/10
That’s because informal interactive exchanges make it possible to address laypeople’s objections precisely and in real time, and to undermine distrust by showing the public that scientists are just ordinary people with good intentions… 7/10
for having inspired us both theoretically and empirically when writing this piece. Our editorial guidelines didn’t allow us to cite everyone, but this thread is an occasion to tell how much we owe them! 9/10
The paper is also the School of Collective Intelligence’s @TheSchoolofCI @UM6P_officiel first scientific publication! 10/10
