What can you do if an airline keeps stonewalling on a refund you’re owed?

Here are 3 options at your disposal:
As a reminder, if an airline cancels your flight, you’re owed a refund. Period. (Also true if they significantly change your flight times.)

Don’t take it from me, take it from the United States Department of Transportation:

So while it’s 100% your right to a refund if an airline cancels your flight, some carriers are still behaving poorly and dragging their feet on giving the refunds they owe travelers.

Here’s 3 things you can do if they’re being a real stick in the mud:

First, hang up and call again.

Agents often have discretion about who gets refunds. Many times you will have better luck with one agent than another. Be friendly and remember the agent isn’t to blame, it’s the airline executives creating disgraceful policies.

Second, you can file a complaint with the DOT:

This isn’t just to blow off steam. Only after receiving 1000s of complaints did the DOT put out a reminder to airlines last week that they couldn’t hold passengers’ $$ hostage if they cancel flights.

Last, you can dispute the charge with your credit card.

Most banks guarantee that if you paid for something and didn’t receive it, you can dispute the charge and be reimbursed by the credit card. If an airline refuses to provide a refund, the chargeback option is there.
