Thanks to my parents and our almost annual trips as a family, the Lake District became like a second home to me. Its place names, roads, lakes, fells and views slowly crept into my consciousness.
Lyrical Ballads at A-Level was my first introduction to Wordsworth. I remember getting excited as I recognised the landscapes in his poems and was bowled over by the compassion in his writing. I absolutely related to his enthusiasm for The Lakes and knew well its healing power.
I couldn't let go. Both my undergraduate and postgraduate dissertation @unibirmingham were about Wordsworth and the Lake District, especially his Guide to the Lakes which, at times, is overwhelmingly moving.
'It has been said in human life there are moments worth ages [...] in the climate of England there are, for the lover of Nature, days worth whole months [...] all else speaks of tranquillity ;- not a breath of air, no restlessness of insects, and not a moving object perceptible'
Then @WordsworthGras had me as one of their trainees and I got to live and work in Grasmere for a year. It was like all my birthdays and Christmases had come at once.
Not only did I revel in the opportunity to work first hand with Wordsworth's manuscripts and spending hours in Dove Cottage...
So Wordsworth has a lot to answer for. Life long friendships, my career, golden memories and much more.
And I hope that @CuratorWT @WTdirector and friends @WordsworthGras get to reopen and celebrate before too long. Thinking of you all today!
