The disconnect between #COVID19 Disease reality and work/life is on my mind today.

I am hoping that this is not divisive. This disease has caused so many loose ends and has too many missing puzzle pieces.

Here's what I mean:
(thread) 1/
Its not affecting all states equally. For example, NY is disproportionately being affected. Everyone is anticipating their own surge, but the burden is not equally shared among states. So, some states go on business as usual. 2/
We should be sending resources to NY, but we don't because we have to anticipate our own surge. Yet, likely if you live in a rural state without massive populations, you could spare resources to states that need it. 2/
The disease is asymptomatic in most people and the mortality rate is disproportionate among ages. Again, this disconnects reality and public perception. 4/
It's not even affecting HCWs equally in the same hospital. ER and ICU are getting hammered with in-person positive patients while others are doing telemedicine. Yet, I've seen non-clinical people posting wartime pictures of themselves wearing a masks. 5/
We attempt to create "safe" practices like intubation boxes (no data to support) and it seems like a good idea. Then someone dislikes the idea (no data) and that gets traction. I call this "building the ship as we sail it". 6/
Everyone is supposed to wear a mask, but when buying groceries, you notice the person cutting meat in the deli is not wearing a mask. Some coworkers are wearing homemade masks. Anesthesia teams wear more PPE than others in room. 8/

#disconnect
The president touts a drug for use in the disease, but it is not even a first line agent used in my hospital. 9/
We still have people believing that Covid-19 is a political maneuver. God bless them, but I believe that the news networks are contributing to this disconnect. We don't have unbiased news anymore. 10/
There is a disconnect in our public messaging. I've heard friends say that their loved one was diagnosed with a metastatic cancer, "but thank God it wasn't Covid."

That is a major disconnect. 11/
The threat of the disease has put many small business owners out of work. They are being forgotten in this terrible pandemic. Can you imagine your life's work being destroyed with a disease that has so many disconnects? 12/
Conclusions: 13/
👉We need to recognize and reduce the disconnects in this disease.
👉Continue to do your part (honor shelter in place, dispel rumor)
👉Allocate resources to the most effected (elders, minorities, ICUs, ERs, highly effected cities)
👉Support your local economy
