1/ Regarding Wisconsin: My parents called yesterday and while on the phone, I told them that their governor signed an EO to move voting to June, so they probably wouldn't have to vote tomorrow (which is today). She told me the GOP was fighting it, which I knew. As we spoke, I...
2/ checked the news. The SCOTUS overruled the governor! This is partisan politics. This is a total disregard of the health of Wisconsin. My mother was distraught, mainly because they ordered absentee ballots, but hadn't received them yet. My parents may not be able to vote...
3/ in this election! My dad has asthma and they are both over 65. They can't go out traipsing among strangers! My parents, who fought for voting rights and who have worked in campaigns, may not be able to vote. My mother, who was born & raised in the Jim Crow South where her. . .
4/ and her family's rights as US citizens were constantly compromised--including the right to vote--may not be able to vote. This is sickening. This is unacceptable. And this is a cruel power grab from the GOP, namely the Wisconsin GOP, that extends from the previous governor
5/ and legislation which tried to strip the present governor's powers before he took his place in office.

Of course, it's not only my parents who cannot go. I'm thinking of a lot of the African-American community there, many who were part of the Great Migration, like my mama.
6/ Lastly, for those of you who associate Wisconsin only with dairy and beer (both of which I appreciate), remember that Milwaukee is nearly 40% African-American and over 18% Latinx. If you think that Wisconsin is a Red State, Trump is the first time a Republican won the state
7/ since Reagan. Milwaukee also has strong Democratic Socialist roots and a powerful community spirit. It's an important state politically still and its elections matter.

The worst part of not moving this election or sending out the absentee ballots on time is that it's not
8/ a primary; it's an election for different offices, including a Wisconsin Supreme Court seat.

Holding the election today is the equivalent of voter disenfranchisement. This is BS.
