This may be unpopular but here it goes. I am seeing a whole lot of places and people from disparate, unrelated fields with no relevant expertise trying to put together COVID-related proposals.
I don't think this is a good way forward.
Is it frustrating to be stuck home while this unfolds? Sure. You feel like it is your civic duty to try to help and make a difference? Sure. (SO STAY HOME, that's how you can make a huge impact).
Are we all afraid we may run out of money and close labs for good? Possible.
But a COVID grant won't save you.
The vast majority of the brilliant, impactful research you see coming out timely at this time, is made by people who are experts in the field or closely related fields.
So, no, our lab is not pivoting to COVID19 research and no, we will not pursue COVID19 grants.
The people best poised to make a difference are those that work on similar and adjacent field, and have the knowledge and expertise.
Those people are very busy at this time and should get additional funds quickly through rapid mechanisms. But really, what COVID teaches us is that basic research and preparedness research have to be funded and sustained AT ALL TIMES.
Are you completely shocked by the pandemic and want to make a difference, change your career trajectory? Stay home now, and when we go back, go ahead! Change career, go into virology or epidemiology etc but your target should not be COVID19, but getting ready for the next big one
And ultimately let's not forget that what COVID19 is screaming at us - that is, politics is where this war is won or lost. So lobby for science, increase science literacy, support science. At. All. times.
And for any administrator out there who may be reading this: your assistant professors are particularly vulnerable during this pandemic. Trying to have them turn their unrelated research to COVID is not having their best interest at heart.
