I had a great conversation with an aspiring principal the other day. Here is my advice for anyone who wants to...but is nervous about...entering the world of school administration:

1. Be Authentic. You do not have to be a “normal,” traditional principal. Be You.
#2. Be Aware. You will not have all the answers the minute you sit in the principal’s chair. Be aware that you will have to say, “I don’t know.” But always be ready to discover the answer.
#3. Be Connected. Find your leadership tribe by connecting with other experienced administrators in your District. Also utilize social media platforms to connect with other principals from around the world.
#4. Be OKAY with Not Making Everyone Happy. Most people are nervous about administration for this reason alone. As long as you’re staying true to your authentic self (See #1), you will get used to this. I think it’s okay to try to make everyone happy...just realize you won’t...
#5. Be a Great Listener. Most conflicts (See #4) get solved because you truly listened, provided actionable feedback, and supported the professionalism of our teachers & staff (they graduate from education programs and get certifications for a reason!)
#6. It’s a pretty awesome gig!
