21/09/1838: #AnneLister & #AnnWalker decide to explore the region of Eaux-Bonnes.

Anne left blank the diary pages of the following week, but her adventures didn't stop... and she ended up running into trouble.

On their arrival in Mauléon, Anne presents their passport for visa purposes, but she is told that it isn't necessary.

So Anne, Ann, and their guides go about their lives.

However, when they're leaving, they're approached by a man who asks for their passport.

2/
Thinking the man is a beggar, Anne refuses to give him the passport and offers him money.

The man was actually a gendarme (officer of the law). So Anne gives him the passport when she realizes her mistake.

3/
Thinking that Anne is a man dressed as a woman and travelling with another person's passport, the gendarme confiscates the document & returns to the barracks.

Anne & Ann follow him there, hoping that the matter would be resolved.

Unfortunately, that would not come to pass.

4/
A report is written containing what Anne considers "detestable falsehoods".

She asks if she's under arrest and she is told that she isn't. Merely held in a "state of prevention".

So Anne asks to be taken to the Sous-Préfet and the gendarmes escort them there.

5/
The polite and respectful Sous-Préfet speaks with Anne, but unfortunately cannot help them with the report.

However, the passport is returned.

Anne is free, but understandably vexed and, certainly, more than a little bit annoyed.

6/
Unbeknownst to Anne and Ann, the Sous-Préfet had written a letter to the Préfet de Pau that conveyed the events of the 28th of Sept.

He explained that they had arrested a person who they thought was a man dressed as a woman and travelling with another person's passport.

7/
On the 29th of September, Anne and Ann travel to Pau to speak with the Préfet.

They have to wait, but eventually are received by him and Anne explains what brought her there.

After this, Anne and Ann leave Pau and rush to find Mr. Latapie (her lawyer from Lourdes).

8/
However, Mr. Latapie wasn't at home, so they had to rush to meet him.

They finally speak with him about the events of Mauléon and, after listening to Charles as witness, he proposes writing a letter to the Préfet on Anne's behalf.

She is pleased.

9/
This letter instructs the Préfet to send any replies to Anne and a certified copy of the gendarmes' report to Mr. Okey (the lawyer of the British Embassy in Paris).

Anne writes to Mr. Okey when she's in Paris. She misses him and it's not clear if they ever spoke.

10/
Unfortunately, Anne doesn't mention the events at Mauléon explicitly, so the story had to be pieced together using several sources.

You can read the story here:

And here's a timeline of events.
