Had a memory of this older lady I met when I worked as a social worker, who didn't know about the back / forward buttons in the browser. She had asked me to help her with something and showed me her little notepad covered in fully written out links...
Her work flow was: Google search, write down the link to the site she wanted, and click through the website (while writing links she visited down) until she couldn't make her way back. Then she would close the browser, and start this process over again.
I told her about the back and forward buttons in the browser, and that you can right click and open links in a new tab, and she looked at me so astounded and excited that she could explore this church history site she was on with even greater depth and speed.
She had also quipped that she didn't like Google because it only had 10 results when you searched something. She had a similar reaction when I told her that the numbers at the bottom of the google results were clickable, and led to even more content.
The lesson is: Be patient with people (especially non-technical people), try to understand why they're doing the things the way they do, and don't be a jerk if they don't know something. A small interaction can be an absolute game changer for a lot of people.
