I find it very interesting that the #numischat on collectors is so far focused entirely long-dead people. Not surprising, as collecting today can be frowned upon. But its important to realize that, when done responsibly, it can be quite a positive experience...

For one, collecting gives individuals a direct, tangible link to the past and makes it real in ways that other forms never could. It drives them to learn more. For the owner of a coin, their own collection is better and more impactful than even the best museum exhibit.

That connection drives many collectors to research areas that are otherwise neglected by formal scholars – particularly with modern coinages and paranumismatica. Many of these passionate individuals share and publish their collection, making it more accessible to all.
